REDD+EMBERÁ WOUNAAN
Indigenous-led to protect forests, strengthen communities, and reduce emissions
The REDD+ Emberá Wounaan project is located in the Darién Province of Panama and covers more than 430,000 hectares of tropical forest. It directly benefits 41 Indigenous communities, with an estimated population of approximately 10,000 people.
Its objective is to consolidate a conservation model based on strengthening Indigenous governance, protecting ancestral culture, and promoting sustainable economic development.
Key activities include:
- Leadership training and the strengthening of transparent governance structures.
- Territorial planning with a cultural and community-based approach.
- Support for sustainable agricultural models and value chains.
- Training in safeguards, conservation, and sustainable forest management.
- Identification of strategic areas for reforestation and restoration.
- Environmental education and strengthening of local capacities, integrating technical and traditional knowledge.
